The writing of Marshall McLuhan would be a good author to support the pop culture aspect of fashion. McLuhan’s core theory is that media is used as an extension of ourselves (phone extends voice, television extends eyes and ears, etc). This relates to fashion in the way that we receive and import information. For example, I am writing mostly about fast fashion and how popular it has become with the current generation. McLuhan helps us understand this when he explains how there is such a short time of information delivery- action and reaction are almost simultaneous. His writing can also clarify the 100 Years Fashion and how it relates to the rise of electronic media and technology. McLuhan’s writing can be very helpful to show how media, advertising, and celebrities can impact fashion and the success of a brand.
