Ásdís Jóelsdóttir is a teacher in the university, an expert on the Icelandic wool and she came to our class on monday. Her purpose was to teach us about Icelandic fashion industry. To understand how the fashion industry is in Iceland you have to understand wool. It all began with wool. It is our material and there everything started. There was a period in Iceland when we produced a lot of clothing made of icelandic wool and then the market changed and every thing fell like a house of cards. There was not enough believe in what the producers were doing, the people with money didn’t show interest and the politics only think about the sea industry.
This was in the 80’s and 90’s, by then we had our first fashion designers coming home after studying abroad. This is such a young trade as all design is in Iceland. Now the question is will they have someone that beliefs in them?

  1. How does the need for support affect how designers do their work? Where is the line between courting the public’s goodwill and interest and creative design? Are the designers in Iceland now doing something different, less dependent on interest in wool?
